10 – Conform or Confirm

10<< Introduction   One of the cases of a crash that might happen post youth ministry for a kid occurs when the youth minister selfishly forms a young person in their own likeness and image… into a little Mini-Me of the youth minister.  This can often lead to trouble, as well as hinting towards unhealthy boundaries.

We took this on in a post regarding aspirational youth ministry. An excerpt:

We can teach people to desire lifelong learning, to express themselves, and to innovate. And, minimejust as important, that it is vital to acknowledge that we can unteach bravery and creativity and initiative. And that we have been doing just that.

We all have to take a look at our areas of concern in youth ministry, for instance, the Sacrament of Confirmation, and wonder if we offer the Gifts of the Holy Spirit to those who conform to our regulations or do we confirm wild-haired young disciples equipped to make commitments, to overcome fear, to deal transparently, to initiate, to plan a course? 9 – Newsletters >>>
