If I could only share one thing with someone at a cocktail party, or sitting next to me on an airplane, or to the tam preparer who asks me to explain my job, it would be this:
I am helping to lead the fight
against Moralistic Therapeutic Deism.
It all comes out of the National Study on Youth and Religion, which I am insisting is not relegated or diminished to yesterday’s news, but still has impact for today. If you are not familiar with the term, you should be; here is the wikipedia definition, but there is plenty more to read, so check the references.
Basically, in giving my heroic answer above (and who dies not like to feel heroic about their work) I am suggesting that I (and we) are aiming for something deeper, richer, and stickier than general generic faith for the young people with whom we minster.
