1ThingmyJobIf I could only share one thing with someone at a cocktail party, or sitting next to me on an airplane, or to the tam preparer who asks me to explain my job, it would be this:

I am helping to lead the fight
against Moralistic Therapeutic Deism.

It all comes out of the National Study on Youth and  Religion, which I am insisting is not relegated or diminished to yesterday’s news, but still has impact for today. If you are not familiar with the term, you should be; here is the wikipedia definition, but there is plenty more to read, so check the references.

Basically,  in giving my heroic answer above (and who dies not like to feel heroic about their work) I am suggesting that I (and we) are aiming for something deeper, richer, and stickier than general generic faith for the young people with whom we minster.

What would be your one thing you would say to describe the voodoo that you do so well?

D. Scott Miller

D. Scott Miller is the dean of Catholic Youth Ministry bloggers which is a polite way of either saying that he is just plain old or has been blogging for a long time (since 2004.)

Scott recently married the lovely Anne and together they have five adult young people and also grandparent three delightful kids (so, maybe he is just plain old!) Scott presently serves at Saint John the Evangelist in Columbia, MD as the director of youth and young adult ministry.

He has previously served on the parish, regional, diocesan, and national levels as well as having taught within a catholic high school. He is one of the founders of RebuildMyChurch and has returned to posting regularly (keeping regular is important to old guys) at ProjectYM.
