Ain’t Got No Words

musicSo, I am running a mid-workday errand on a beautiful spring day. I’m walking a brisk little pace, keeping beat with the soundtrack playing inside my imagination.

Into the bank I go for a money order and queue up into the line. As we move forward, the guy in front of me recognizes the guy behind me and starts up a conversation.

GUY FORWARD: Hey, man, how you doing?
GUY BEHIND: Dunno… Dunno. My song ain’t got no words.

And then the next teller was ready. But that haunted me for quite the while. A random conversation overheard and unexplained actually bummed me out a little bit for the remainder of a beautiful sunny day.

Our work in youth ministry is offering a song, but making sure to attach words to it as well. It is the beautiful dance between evangelization (step to the beat) and catechesis (sing along.) Let’s pray for the GUY BEHIND and work towards ensuring that all our young people have GUYs FORWARD willing to respond to young people and to assist them in attaching words to their hymns of faith.

D. Scott Miller

D. Scott Miller is the dean of Catholic Youth Ministry bloggers which is a polite way of either saying that he is just plain old or has been blogging for a long time (since 2004.)

Scott recently married the lovely Anne and together they have five adult young people and also grandparent three delightful kids (so, maybe he is just plain old!) Scott presently serves at Saint John the Evangelist in Columbia, MD as the director of youth and young adult ministry.

He has previously served on the parish, regional, diocesan, and national levels as well as having taught within a catholic high school. He is one of the founders of RebuildMyChurch and has returned to posting regularly (keeping regular is important to old guys) at ProjectYM.
