From Obscurity to Household Name

You’re just an ordinary teenager working an ordinary job, when someone notices that you are ridiculously good looking. Because of these good looks, you plucked from obscurity and soon everyone knows your name. You’ve gone from someone with a pretty small network to now having incredible reach and influence. And now the world is watching to see what you’ll do with your new-found influence.

If that’s your story, you’re probably #AlexFromTarget.

Or maybe you’re #EstherFromSusa.

If you’ve been living under a social media rock for the past week, Alex is a teenager who works at a Target outside Dallas, TX. A couple of teenage girls thought he was cute, so they tweeted out a picture of him. That photo picked up the hashtag #AlexFromTarget and quickly went VIRAL. It has since been tweeted, Instagrammed and shared well over a million times! In less than a week, Alex has picked up 700k followers on Twitter (a big jump from the 140 he had before this). He’s been talked about on major news websites, major news networks and blogs across the world. He’s even been on The Ellen Show. All because someone thought he was hot. No special skills or talents. In fact, when Ellen ask him if he had any special talents like singing, his response was “I can apparently bag groceries pretty well.”

2,400 years ago in Susa, the capitol city of the Persian Empire, there was a teenager named Esther. She came from an ordinary family. Actually, she came out of a pretty depressing situation (her parents died when she was young, so she grew up being raised by her cousin Mordecai). But one day, someone noticed her beauty. In fact, they thought she was so beautiful that they entered her into an Ancient Persian version of the Bachelor. She was so beautiful, that she was chosen by the king as the most attractive woman in all of Persia. Her prize: she was crowned queen of the largest empire in the world.

Because of her good looks, Esther went from being an obscure unknown teenager to the most powerful and influential woman in the world.

Because of his good looks, Alex went from being an obscure unknown teenager to an internet superstar.

#EstherFromSusa used her power and influence to save an entire nation of people – even when doing so came at great personal risk. She put the good of others above her own personal needs and comfort.

The question is: will #AlexFromTarget use his influence to save and serve others? Will he put those in need above himself?

What about you: what would you do if you woke up tomorrow with that kind of fame and influence?
