I had read the “I Have A Dream” speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quite a few times in the past. However, I had never listened and watched the speech… until now.
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. day on Monday, January 21, 2013 (in the United States), I decided to actually watch the speech for the first time. Wow! It is a different speech when you hear how a gifted orator delivers a message that he is extremely passionate about. I found myself more moved by his words than all the times I read the text.
“I have a dream today.” I encourage you to watch this powerful 18 minute speech below.
I found myself reflecting on my own hopes and dreams for the church. I have a constructive spirit of discontent. I love the church, but I think there is so much more that we can do.
I have had the pleasure to surround myself with others who have a dream for the church. I have learned from others what passion for Christ can do to our hearts and our ministries. People like D. Scott Miller and Tony Vasinda, founders of ReBuildMyChurch.org, who are trying to find ways to re-work, re-think, and re-build youth ministry. People like John Roberto who launch a new ministry, called Life Long Faith, to help you and I re-vision what faith formation looks like in the 21st century.
People like Dr. Christian Smith who study the data and statistics to let you and I know what is working and what is not. People like Frank Mercadante, founder of Cultivation Ministries, who provide dynamic training and formation for youth ministry leaders in the church.
People like you who work day in and day out serving others in your ministry to help bring them closer to Christ.
Each of you bring a dream to your ministry. Just like all the people I mentioned, each of you bring a dream to your church. So, I ask one simple but all important question:
What is your dream for your ministry and your church?
