Just the Merely Essential
Just the Merely Essential
Seth Godin is a brilliant business blogger, who usually has a flash of brilliance briefly told. Recently, he wrote about this:
The hard stuff is measurable, quantifiable and easy to put into a spreadsheet. This concrete stuff gives you an easy way to demand a bonus or track progress.
The soft stuff is merely essential, the real reason you do what you do. Ironically, then, hard is easy and soft is difficult.
The question, I guess, is whether or not you and your team spend most of your time on the hard stuff, merely because it’s easier to measure, to argue about and to hide behind.
Happy New Year. Let’s resolve to spend more time on the soft but difficult stuff… and, in doing so, make a resolution that transforms into a revolution.
D. Scott Miller
D. Scott Miller is the dean of Catholic Youth Ministry bloggers which is a polite way of either saying that he is just plain old or has been blogging for a long time (since 2004.)
Scott recently married the lovely Anne and together they have five adult young people and also grandparent three delightful kids (so, maybe he is just plain old!) Scott presently serves at Saint John the Evangelist in Columbia, MD as the director of youth and young adult ministry.
He has previously served on the parish, regional, diocesan, and national levels as well as having taught within a catholic high school. He is one of the founders of RebuildMyChurch and has returned to posting regularly (keeping regular is important to old guys) at ProjectYM.
