The Academy Awards are presented at the end of this month. In what started out as one posting, has now become ten as we countdown to Oscar night with my own personal favorite movies. These are movies that I could watch over and over and over again… and have!
3. Going My Way (1944) – This Bing Cosby classic is a movie anyone should watch if considering the vocation of priesthood, youth ministry or both. Bing, as Fr. Chuck O’Malley, helps to negotiate parish life with an elderly pastor, young adults searching for meaning, and kids who have taken the streets. He does it all with grace, charm, and the ease of a song. At the 2002 NCCYM in Denver, I helped to program the showing of a clip from it. The scene has pastor Father Fitzgibbons telling the story of an encounter with two boys (who he doesn’t know had knocked over a turkey delivery truck), praises them as fie boys from fine families, who had donated the turkey on their dinner table. He concludes with I gave them both my blessing. (O’Malley responds with) And they gave you the bird. Even funnier, for today’s audience, I think. (likewise enjoyed Lilies of the Field, Sound of Music, and The Passion of the Christ)
