New Facebook Image Sizes

Just when you finally started to get the hang of using Facebook, they go and change things.  This time it has to do with images (and if you’re not using images in your Facebook posts, you need to be).

New Facebook Photo Size is 470px by 394px

Photo Posts

Facebook has now moved to a “scale to fit” model.  Basically they’ve set a maximum width and height, and your image will be scaled to fit into that invisible box.

The dimensions of that box are 470px by 394px.

If you post a square image… the image will be resized to height and width of 394px – leaving 76px of ugly whitespace on the right.  Don’t post square images.

If you post a portrait image… the image will be resized to height 394px  (with the appropriate relative width) – leaving ugly whitespace on the right.  Don’t post portrait images.

If you post a horizontal image… the image will be resized to a width of 470px (with the appropriate relative height).  Any leftover whitespace in Facebook’s invisible box will be removed.  Horizontal images are good.

If you post a 4:3 image… the image will be resized to a width of 470px and a height of 352px.  Any leftover whitespace in Facebook’s invisible box will be removed.  4:3 images are better.

If you post a 235:197 image… the image will be resized to a width of 470px and a height of 394px and use the maximum amount of timeline real estate available for your image.  235:197 images are best.

The ideal Facebook image size is 470px by 246px.Link Images

When you post a link to Facebook, it pulls an image from the page you’re linking to (either from the page itself or as defined in the page header).

Unlike photos, link images are cropped.  Facebook will automatically crop the image down to a ratio of 1.91:1.  That image will be scaled to be 470px by 246px.

Another important note: never use images smaller than either of these dimensions.

Hopefully that helps!

I’d love to hear how you are using images on Facebook.  Share in the comments below.
