On Being Powerless

blackoutAlong the east coast on the weekend before Independence Day, a sudden storm brewed up causing as much damage in less than an hour than Hurricane Irene caused last year in over six hours.  It caused the lights to go out for many days again.

Last year, I reflected on prepping to Surviving the Storm, but, in this case, there was no preparation time.  Added on top of that, My son was staying at the apartment and there was additional furniture for him awaiting their transport to his own place.

So, in the heat of the summer, we were in the dark and air-conditioning-deprived as well. I know, I know, total first world problem, right?

It had its moments of challenge, I will admit… however, I liked the quiet it inflicted and the demands of preparing in the evening twilight what I was wearing and packing for the next the next day, of figuring out how to “leave a light on for you” for my son, and a different way of operating. In the meantime, I had some great meals out, knocked off reading a book, and outlined another writing project.

You are basically powerless to control anything more than your own attitude in these situations. Meanwhile, our office has had more snow days in the summer recently than in the winter… and all I’ve got to say about that is… BRING IT!
