Sacred Cows

sacredcrows Jack Regan, our internet colleague over at catholicyouthwork.com took on the matter of sacred cows recently. You know, those programmatic elements that are the way that we have always done it, that we continue to do without making much sense but for the fact that it is known to us.

We addressed it last month, speaking, in brief, of traditions.

What is for your parish or school?  Is it the awkward close of the rally day with the dance?  Might it be the passing of the candle for prayer that combines too much information sharing along with extended periods of silence?  Perhaps it has become the annual uniform-free day can good drive that you do for the local food bank without ever explaining the work of the food bank or the needs of its beneficiaries.

(Love the image that Jack used. Click to enlarge… I’ll take mine medium rare with cheesy hash browns on the side.)

What are the sacred cows you have seen?

D. Scott Miller

D. Scott Miller is the dean of Catholic Youth Ministry bloggers which is a polite way of either saying that he is just plain old or has been blogging for a long time (since 2004.)

Scott recently married the lovely Anne and together they have five adult young people and also grandparent three delightful kids (so, maybe he is just plain old!) Scott presently serves at Saint John the Evangelist in Columbia, MD as the director of youth and young adult ministry.

He has previously served on the parish, regional, diocesan, and national levels as well as having taught within a catholic high school. He is one of the founders of RebuildMyChurch and has returned to posting regularly (keeping regular is important to old guys) at ProjectYM.
