On Sunday, I spoke briefly before our Archdiocesan Youth Advisory Council who were recognizing their impending graduates.
The seniors were speaking of their desire to continue being involved with their faith/ continuing to serve as leaders.
I suggested that the difference that they would find between a young person’s faith and a mature faith is being being a TAKER and being a MAKER.
Youth Ministry finds itself within a consumerist culture – – – We need to create systems where faith becomes sustainable outside our the supports of our youth ministry efforts.
Young people need to own a call to the mission while also recognizing that they cannot fulfill that call exclusive of the community.
How will we get there…?

D. Scott Miller is the dean of Catholic Youth Ministry bloggers which is a polite way of either saying that he is just plain old or has been blogging for a long time (since 2004.)
Scott recently married the lovely Anne and together they have five adult young people and also grandparent three delightful kids (so, maybe he is just plain old!) Scott presently serves at Saint John the Evangelist in Columbia, MD as the director of youth and young adult ministry.
He has previously served on the parish, regional, diocesan, and national levels as well as having taught within a catholic high school. He is one of the founders of RebuildMyChurch and has returned to posting regularly (keeping regular is important to old guys) at ProjectYM.

MarkO really nails it on the head and states a growing concern amongst youth leaders. As we look at “faith formation” in the future, it needs to be something that sticks beyond the current program and leadership. It needs to endure. Much of this is the work of God, not solely on us, but we need to do all we can to increase the longevity of the soil and the toil. Thanks for sharing this clip, I will likely be using this simple statement to share our collective concern.
