What Makes A Great Website?

Josh Simmons (CEO of eCatholic) opened the Catholic New Media Conference‘s Tech Summit by talking about what makes a good website. He had seven great points I thought I would share:

  1. Purpose driven
    • Define your purpose
    • Define your audience
    • Research / Benchmarking
    • Plan your content around what’s important
    • Plan your structure
  2. Beautiful design
    • Clean and simple – less is more
    • Consistency
    • Brand reflective – easy to see/understand your presence
    • Quick & nimble – fast loading
    • Design independence (use CSS)
  3. Great User Experience
    • Intuitive, consistent navigation
    • Browser/platform indepence
    • Mobile usability
    • Accessibility
  4. Engaging Content
    • Dynamic and current
    • Relevant and meaningful
    • Provide an experience and dialog
    • CMS: Easy to update
  5. Easy to Find (SEO)
    • Domain name: simple and short and use keywords
    • Tags: Title, Meta, Header, Alt, H1
    • Content
    • Links (incoming)
  6. Mobile
    • Responsive design: detect width not agent
  7. Beyond the Domain
    • Go to where the people are, connect with them, and point them back to your site.
    • Facebook, Twitter, Email, YouTube, Pintrest, SMS, etc.

How Does Your Website Score?

Take a look at your parish or your student ministry site: how many of Josh’s seven qualities of a great website does it achieve?

Michael Marchand

Michael is a Catholic evangelist, author and speaker.
